Smart Compost AI: artificial intelligence and technology for more sustainable composting

At CIFP Ciudad Jardín LHII, we have started working on Smart Compost AI, an innovation project together with other Vocational Education and Training centres in the Basque Country. The project combines technology, artificial intelligence and the circular economy to develop a smart automated composting system.

At CIFP Ciudad Jardín LHII, we have started working on Smart Compost AI, an innovation project together with other Vocational Education and Training centres in the Basque Country. The project combines technology, artificial intelligence and the circular economy to develop a smart automated composting system.

The project involves CIFP Laudioalde LHII, CIFP Don Bosco LHII, CIFP Ciudad Jardín LHII and CIFP Hostelería Gamarra LHII. Each centre contributes its knowledge and expertise to address a common challenge from different perspectives: automation and industrial integration, mechanical design, artificial intelligence and data, and application and validation in real hospitality environments.

The proposal goes far beyond simply monitoring a composting unit. The system will integrate sensors, PLC-based automation, OT/IT communications, data storage and analysis, dashboards and secure remote access. It will also incorporate artificial intelligence to identify and classify the materials introduced into the process.

One of the project's innovative features will be its ability to interpret which materials are being added to the composting system and estimate the balance between nitrogen-rich and carbon-rich materials. Based on this information, the system will be able to generate alerts and recommendations to help improve the composting process.

Smart Compost AI will therefore provide a real-world example of Smart Industry applied to sustainability, connecting the physical and digital worlds and turning data into useful information for decision-making.

The project is being developed in collaboration with the Basque VET network and is aligned with areas such as industrial digitalisation, cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence and the circular economy.

At CIFP Ciudad Jardín LHII, we are also continuing to promote specialised training in future technologies. Our centre offers Specialisation Courses in Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence & Big Data, bringing students the skills needed to participate in applied technological innovation projects.

We continue learning, experimenting and developing solutions for the real challenges of the future.
